Bacardi Carta Oro Rum, named ‘oro’ from the Spanish word for ‘gold’, is produced in Puerto Rico and is a blend of 14 molasses-based rums. The rums are aged 1-2 years in bourbon barrels before being passed through a blend of charcoals. Formerly named ‘Barcardi Gold Rum’, it was relaunched in 2014 as Carta Oro with an increase in ABV from 37.5% to 40%.
Country: Puerto Rico
Tasting note: Strong aromas of vanilla, brown sugar and bananas are followed by sweet roasted nuts, toffee and honey. It has an alcoholic burn mixed with heavy charcoal flavors, but it is not nearly as pronounced as its clear sibling. While this too isn’t much of a neat sipper, it’s a decent cheap bottle to have on hand for mixing.
